Michelle Segar in Live Happy Now podcast: New Year, New You

December 31, 2015

CPO Faculty Associate Michelle Segar was interviewed in a Live Happy magazine podcast entitled “New Year, New You.” In the 20-minute segment, she explains why most New Year’s resolutions don’t succeed.

“The reason we struggle is because we have been taught to change our behavior in a system that is actually getting us focused on the future,” Segar explains. She goes on to suggest that in order to stick with a goal, people need to think and really identify “deeply meaningful” reasons behind wanting to succeed.

“We want to get away from the idea that we should do something, to getting into a system where we want to do something,” she explains to Live Happy. Segar sites research that individuals who focus on immediate rewards, are consistent, and start small with their New Year’s resolutions are more likely to succeed longer and stick with their goals.

Michelle Segar, director of U-M’s Sport, Health, and Activity Research and Policy Center, will present at the first Positive Links Speakers Series of 2016. Join us on January 12 at 4:00 p.m. Learn more and register.
