The Early Bird Conveys the Culture: The Effects of Preboarding Practices on Newcomer Socialization and Performance

Talk description:

There has been a long-standing debate on whether the period before newcomers join their organizations is integral to their socialization process. In this research, I introduce the prelude stage—the time period between accepting a job offer and joining the organization—as a unique beginning during which organizations and managers can leave cultural imprints on newcomers and enhance their job performance through using preboarding practices. In a field study and field experiment, I investigate the effects of naturally-occurring and experimentally-induced preboarding practices—relative to onboarding practices and realistic job previews—on newcomers’ cultural learning, cultural adaptation, commitment, and performance.

Research is the heart of Positive Organizational Scholarship (POS), and we want to make sure that we support each other in developing high quality research. To that end, we created the Adderley Positive Research Incubator for sharing and encouraging POS-related research ideas that are at various stages of development.
