Advantages and disadvantages to altering your sleep schedule.

Multiple studies have proven that lack of sleep takes a toll on both your health and cognitive ability. Gretchen Spreitzer has researched this topic extensively, and was quoted in a BBC article regarding her study about making sure your employees are getting enough sleep. What if you could shift your sleeping hours to times that will result in higher productivity during the day? According to Spreitzer, “There are some advantages: you create discipline where you have a lot more time for yourself – to get your own goals done before the family gets up, before colleagues want to meet with you,” but you may end up sacrificing your, “social network and ability to develop strong social relationships.”

Spreitzer is the Keith E. and Valerie J. Alessi Professor of Business Administration, professor of management and organizations, and a member of the Center for Positive Organizations’ core faculty. Her research focuses on employee empowerment and leadership development, particularly within a context of organizational change and decline.
